THE YELLOW PAGES is a weekly newsletter recommending Asian and AAPI films, music, writing, and other inspiration — all the artsy things I wished for growing up! Products linked through this post may earn a commission.
A quick note: in honor of AAPI Heritage Month but also in solidarity with the WGA Strike, all monthly proceeds from THE YELLOW PAGES will go to the Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment (CAPE) who has a long history of supporting screenwriters. Whether you’re already a paid subscriber, want to upgrade, donate, or gift a friend, everything I make in May from this newsletter will be donated to CAPE.
I’ve been dreading Mother’s Day this year. I’ve been public about my journey with infertility, and in the last decade, I had come to peace with it. However (as I wrote about in my other Substack) I became pregnant in February for the first time ever, resulting in my first miscarriage. It’s re-opened up scars I thought had healed.
Despite my complicated feelings, I still wanted to do something special this holiday. So I decided to interview my own mother.
MOVIES MENTIONED:
The Road Home, Red Sorghum, Ju Dou, Farewell My Concubine, To Live, and Shanghai Triad.
Also, here are some pregnancy-themed Asian/AAPI businesses I wanted to highlight.
🤰🏻 Emilia George: “Our clothing is thoughtfully designed to give you the functionality and style that motherhood deserves. Pre-bump to postpartum, our silhouettes flatter your changing figure.” I’ve actually spotted their maternity wear on Rent the Runway before and been tempted to get a few outfits for myself.
🌙 Pink Moon: “Pink Moon is a self-care brand that draws from the transformative benefits of holistic practices such as Traditional Chinese Medicine and Astrology to create results-driven skincare formulas.” I connect with the vibe of this company, and not because it was founded by someone named Lin Chen (spelled differently). They have a pregnancy-safe section that includes everything from Gua Sha Oil to Deodorant.
🫖 Rae’s Roots Tea: I’ll admit… I’m not exactly sure what’s going on with this new and expectant mother’s tea line, because everything on their site is sold out, and their Instagram hasn’t been updated for quite some time. But I’m still including them, since they have products available for sale on Amazon that I think would make a good gift.
In writing and creating this post, I can feel myself taking steps toward repairing my broken heart. So thank you for reading, and giving me the space to do just that.
For paid subscribers, I’m adding a section to cover more recent news and events. Thanks so much for your financial support.
